Dreams Flamenco Ballet Jose Porcel

No one is more passionate than the artist, and no form of art, it might be said, expresses passion as well as the traditional flamenco dance of Spain. It’s fitting then, that the new show by international flamenco sensation Jose Porcel is about the effort, passion, and joy inherent to the artistic dream. The performance “Dream,” premiering at the Suzanne Dellal Center at the end of the month, features eight dancers and six musicians from Porcel’s troupe, as well as guest maestro Silvia Duran, Israel’s premier flamenco artist. Jose Porcel knows what it means to live the artistic dream.

Born in Sevile, the dancer and choreographer has been studying classical flamenco since childhood, eventually signing on with the Ballet de Valencia and the National Ballet of Spain. Since forming his own troupe, Porcel has participated in the Festival of Madrid in Danca and the Opera of Cefirelli. Though Porcel has an innovative, contemporary style of choreography, he remains a flamenco purist; he even includes a short history of the dance, developed in the 18th century by Gypsies in southern Spain, with each show’s program.
