August Attractions Critics' Picks

Platform Thursdays

After a successful premiere last year in the Jaffa Port, this year the Platform Design and Art event will move to a new location, to the new municipal Rothschild 1 complex, which is an intersection between the southern part of the city and the center and is part of the city's connection to the culture and art within it. Art Platform: 40 stands offering the works of artists and artisans for sale, a Platform shop where 50 artists will be represented, musical performances, installations, performance and dance, video-art screenings and rotating exhibitions. Platform was founded by 11 artists with the support of the Tel Aviv Municipality to provide a platform for independent artists from various disciplines ranging from sculpture and photography to industrial design and poetry. The public is invited to enjoy the atmosphere, purchase original creations, watch performances or just sip a glass of beer in an artistic happening that will return every Thursday in August.

Big Bambu

Consisting of 7,000 bamboo poles and 80 kilometers of climbing ropes, the 16-meter-high outdoor sculpture takes seven weeks to erect, even with the help of 25 mountain climbers from the United States, Italy and Israel. When the combination of sculpture and architecture is completed, visitors at Israel Museum’s Billy Rose Garden will be able to traverse dozens of meters of walking trails circumscribing the exhibit, and climb on and touch the work of art. Previously, artists Doug and Mike Starn have set up the exhibit on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Rome and the Noashima Contemporary Art Museum in Japan; the construction takes a different form in every location. The bamboo creation will create a night life of its own on July 10, with special lighting and other complimentary works expressing the ideas behind Big Bambu. Evening activities will continue in the following week.
