For the region’s children, the barrage of rocket attacks facing southern Israel over the past two weeks has been especially trying. In addition to the anxiety created by constant warning sirens and talk of war, the cancellation of camps and activities due to the Home Front Command’s advisory has disrupted normal summer routines.

In 10 communities in the South, Youth Futures, a Jewish Agency mentoring program for at-risk pre-teens and adolescents, has been working with families to provide a sense of security, routine, and fun for local children.

Every day, Youth Future’s mentors reach out to the program’s 1,421 participants to discuss children’s concerns and go over security protocol. Children suffering extreme trauma are connected with Natal, a center for victims of terror and war, to receive counseling.

But for most, it is enough for many families simply to work with the program staff to re-establish a daily routine. Comfort also comes from more distant locations; Youth Futures participants in northern Israel send letters of assurance and care packages to their peers in the South.

Youth Futures, in coordination with the Jewish Federations of North America and the National Emergency Authority, sponsored a day trip to the Shefayim Water Park this week, where pools, ice cream, and water slides provided some much-needed distraction. Local children also enjoyed a day of science programs created by Noble Energy.
