Vintage speaks the language of eras, style, and soul; second-hand can also be someone’s Zara dress from last season. In Tel Aviv, the capital of effortless cool, these two categories live side by side, and in the best shops, they even blend beautifully. We went for a spin (yes, with a reusable tote) to find the 11 vintage and second-hand stores you need to know – whether you’re after a one-off look, a piece with a past, or simply a worthy alternative to guilt-free splurging.

Chelsea

What began as a genuine passion for second-hand fashion has become one of the most impressive shops in the genre – thanks entirely to Michal Sonsino-Ganor, a former fashion designer who founded Chelsea about a decade ago. Her sharp curatorial eye shows in every rack and every shelf, and the fact that the place showcases around 7,000 items doesn’t contradict the high level of meticulous selection. The store spans two spacious floors in the Gan HaHashmal neighborhood, with a spot-on mix of vintage and second-hand: from Zara and familiar brands to high-end designer names. Their new Closets project is another bonus – a clever initiative that lets women rent a personal closet and sell items from their own wardrobe as if it were a little boutique. A must-stop for lovers of the genre.

Aderet: the First Lady of second-hand

For two decades now, “Aderet” has been a household name in the local second-hand scene. Since 2004, the central Tel Aviv shop has offered an addictive mix of vintage, retro, designers’ and brands’ overstock (from here and abroad), women’s, men’s, and a bit of kids’ – all with super-precise curation and in excellent condition. In the spirit of sustainable fashion, the clothes come from the wardrobes of the shop’s customers, not from faraway imports. At Aderet you’ll find everything – from Levi’s jeans and Adidas sneakers, through Atta dresses and ‘80s band tees, to bags from luxury houses or capsule pieces from Zara and Topshop. And the prices? Behind the magic is Ofira Ober – the mother of Aderet and Argaman – with a rare knack for curating the kind of items that truly thrill. Even before “sustainability” became a ubiquitous hashtag, back in 2014 a European concept landed in Tel Aviv with a local twist: fashion by weight. The first Buy Kilo shop opened in the Montefiore neighborhood, where a pharmacy once stood, swapping prescriptions for addictive vintage pieces. Since then, two more branches have joined, including the Florentin one, considered the wildest and most experimental of them all. The idea is simple: you pick an item, weigh it, and pay by category.
